What’s going on:

In 2010, we have continued our small group classes in Bangor, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth (new location at the Public Library), Kennebunkport, Lewiston, and Deering.  Keith taught a well-attended inaugural SAT prep class at Hyde.  This fall, we will teach a course at Gould Academy in Bethel, and we are making plans to teach a spring SAT course at Hebron Academy in Hebron.   We have continued to license our curricular materials to Maine high schools, including those in Cape Elizabeth, Monmouth, Lewiston, Sanford, and Bridgton.  Bo Gallup, an experienced SAT/ACT prep teacher (as well as a math and physics maven), joined our ranks and has worked productively with students throughout the Midcoast and in Brunswick.  Dugan, her husband Peter, and their boys are running a summer camp on Panther Pond in Raymond this summer.  Among the camp’s offerings is (get this) SAT prep!  Dugan will use the Maine Prep methods and materials in the camp’s classes.  Everybody here wishes the Slovenskis the best of luck; knowing them, the camp will be a big success.

In 2009, we instituted a new scaled pricing schedule that have made licensing our TEN FOR TEN® SAT prep and ACT prep curricular materials more affordable for smaller Maine high schools and those more remote from our Brunswick offices.  Our SAT prep curriculum was used this year at public high schools in Cape Elizabeth, Freeport, Lewiston, Monmouth, South Aroostook, and Vinalhaven.   We taught over 30 sets of SAT classes from Bangor to Kennebunkport.  In February, Kathryn taught our first set of SAT prep classes at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland.  We began our first Falmouth class at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in November.  Rich taught test prep four days a week for the entire fall semester at Bridgton Academy.  Last but certainly not least, Jessica Kaplan of Maine Prep was inducted into the UNUM teachers’ Hall of Fame based on her success with the SAT prep course she designed and runs for South Portland High School.  Jessica’s Testwise course has used Maine Prep’s TEN FOR TEN curriculum for five years, and this year’s juniors posted an average score gain from PSAT to SAT of 176 points.

In 2008, we ran over 25 sets of SAT prep classes in Bangor, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Kents Hill, Lewiston, and Readfield (Maranacook), and Susan Thombs taught our first set of SAT prep classes in the Kennebunkport area. Dugan and Jack taught “before-school” SAT prep sessions that Freeport High School provided to 60 of its students at no charge (and that helped raise scores as much as 300 points).  Lewiston High School has begun using the Maine Prep SAT curriculum in both in-school and after-school SAT prep sessions. In October and November, we trained teachers at Monmouth Academy, which will use the TEN FOR TEN SAT prep curriculum to help its students do well on the May 2009 SAT.  Sean Lent became the first Maine Prep teacher to teach a curricular course for a private school when he taught SAT prep to over 120 postgrads to Bridgton Academy.  In July, we opened our new offices at 22 Parkers Way in Brunswick.

In 2007, we worked with over 300 students privately and in classes. Our spring SAT prep class in Cape Elizabeth was expanded to two sections to accommodate more than 30 students; we added two faculty members, and began teaching SAT prep classes in Lewiston/Auburn and Bangor.  We trained teachers at Cape Elizabeth High School and Lewiston High School to use our TEN FOR TEN® targeted SAT prep curriculum to help their students prepare for the May 2007 SAT.

In 2006, we trained teachers at Skowhegan Area High School and Messalonskee High School. We provided SAT prep materials orientation to teachers at Mount Ararat High School in Topsham and Deering High School in Portland. We began licensing our proprietary Maine Prep TEN FOR TEN® targeted SAT prep curriculum. We added two new teachers to our faculty, and during the year we worked privately and in small classes with 240 students.

In 2005, we began our SAT prep for high school teachers, training faculty at Bridgton Academy. During the year we added two teachers to our faculty and worked with 195 students in classes and private tutoring sessions.

In 2004, Maine Prep opened its first office at 103 Harpswell Road in Brunswick. The company had five students. By the end of the year, we had added a second teacher (Jessica Kaplan, who also heads the curricular SAT program at South Portland HS) and had prepared 120 students. To help students be ready for the New SAT (March 2005), we designed and introduced a comprehensive SAT essay analysis system, which provides each SAT essay writer with specific as well as general feedback from our essay professionals. In addition, we began studying and preparing to teach methods useful in the SAT Writing (grammar and usage) section.

In 2002-3, Jack Mahoney devised and wrote the first edition of the Maine Prep TEN FOR TEN® targeted SAT prep curriculum. Jack consulted with South Portland High School, which was instituting Maine’s first curricular SAT course.
